A Russian drone and missile strike on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv has killed at least one person and injured seven others, city officials report.
Early on Saturday morning, residential buildings in several districts were hit, resulting in loud explosions that reverberated throughout the city.
Kyiv's mayor Vitaly Klitschko stated that a 13-year-old child was among the injured, with four people needing hospitalization.
This incident followed a similar attack earlier in the week, which claimed the lives of seven individuals. The recent bombardment occurs as Ukrainian negotiators prepare for talks with U.S. officials regarding an amended peace plan.
The head of Kyiv's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, confirmed that several targets on the city's outskirts were impacted during Saturday's assault. He reported one fatality and seven injuries, including one child, with rescuers recovering the body of a man from the Sviatoshynskyi district.
Two women were also reported injured in Brovary, east of Kyiv, where missiles and drones struck residential areas.
Klitschko described how the attack sparked fires in the lower floors of a high-rise apartment building and that another blaze was brought under control in a central district.
This wave of violence follows a period in which deadly strikes between Russia and Ukraine led to residential destruction in Kyiv and casualties in Russia's Rostov region.
The aggression from the Russian side coincides with ongoing discussions of a draft peace plan, initially heavily favoring Moscow's demands but revised through talks between Ukrainian and U.S. negotiators in Geneva.
Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated his main demands for ending the conflict, indicating that Russia would cease its military actions only when Ukrainian troops withdraw from territories claimed by Moscow.
Amidst these developments, President Zelensky announced in a recent video address plans for further meetings with U.S. delegations to solidify the points agreed upon in Geneva into actionable plans for peace and security guarantees.
