In brief
As Hurricane Erick intensifies into a Category 4 storm, Mexico braces for impact, with warnings issued for life-threatening conditions across multiple states.
Hurricane Erick has escalated into an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), as it heads toward Mexico's Pacific coast. Wind speeds have reached a dangerous 230 km/h (145 mph) as of late Wednesday, with predictions of further strengthening possible before it makes landfall on Thursday. The storm is on course to impact the regions of Oaxaca and Guerrero, with forecasters alerting that "devastating wind damage" could ensue. In light of these impending threats, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged residents in the storm's trajectory to remain vigilant and adhere to official recommendations: "stay indoors, and not go out." A hurricane warning is currently in effect, covering a 500 km stretch (approximately 300 miles) along the coast from Acapulco to Puerto Ángel. This encompasses warnings for potentially life-threatening floods and swells across these regions. For those residing in low-lying areas, near waterways or rivers, President Sheinbaum advised immediate relocation to designated shelters, emphasizing safety as the priority. People in mountainous territories have been alerted to the risks of mudslides in their local areas. To facilitate an efficient response, approximately 2,000 shelters had been established across the states of Chiapas, Guerrero, and Oaxaca, with over 18,000 first responders on standby to assist with hurricane preparations. This storm marks the first hurricane expected to touch land in Mexico this season, which runs from June through November. This comes on the heels of October's deadly Hurricane Otis, which claimed at least 50 lives and left many caught off-guard due to its rapid intensification. Residents and officials remain on high alert as Hurricane Erick approaches the coast. Are you in an area affected by Hurricane Erick? If it is safe to do so, we invite you to share your experiences.
