George Wendt, famed for his role as Norm Peterson in the renowned sitcom Cheers, has passed away at the age of 76. According to his family, the cherished actor and comedian died peacefully in his sleep early Tuesday morning. A family spokesperson reflected on his character saying, "George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever."

Wendt embodied the role of Norm in all 275 episodes of Cheers, which aired from 1982 to 1993, earning him six consecutive Emmy nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series. The character was a staple in the show's dynamic, known for his memorable entrances into the bar and the signature greeting of fellow patrons who would shout his name.

In a recent reunion, Wendt mingled with his former castmates at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2024, including notable names like Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, Kelsey Grammer, and John Ratzenberger.

Beyond Cheers, Wendt's filmography includes roles in films like Dreamscape, Forever Young, and Gung Ho. He also appeared alongside Macaulay Culkin in Michael Jackson's iconic "Black or White" music video released in 1991.

Wendt’s long-lasting marriage to actor Bernadette Birkett began in 1978, and together they had three children. He was also the proud uncle to actor and comedian Jason Sudeikis, who gained fame for his lead role in the critically acclaimed series Ted Lasso.
