In brief

US authorities are investigating possible cyber espionage targeting Donald Trump and JD Vance, with alleged connections to Chinese cybercriminals. The FBI and CISA are coordinating responses to strengthen telecommunications defenses amidst widespread concerns about foreign interference in US elections.

Cybersecurity concerns have surged as US authorities reveal a potential cyber attack targeting the communication devices of former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance. According to sources speaking to CBS News, officials believe that hackers linked to China aimed to access the phones or networks used by these political figures.Reports indicate that the Trump-Vance campaign was alerted to the threats, which reportedly extend to individuals associated with the Harris-Walz campaign as well. While investigations are ongoing, US officials have not confirmed whether any information was successfully compromised. The Department of Justice and FBI declined to comment specifically on these candidates' potential targeting. In a joint statement, the FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have acknowledged an investigation into unauthorized access to commercial telecommunications infrastructure by actors from the People's Republic of China. They stated that upon realizing the malicious activity, they promptly informed affected companies, provided technical support, and shared intelligence with other potential victims. The threat is being treated as a case of espionage rather than an attempt at influencing an election campaign, as per a source close to CBS News. Earlier this month, it was reported that significant US telecommunications companies had also been affected by cyber breaches, with Verizon allegedly being a target used by hackers against Trump and Vance's data, as noted by the New York Times. Verizon spokesperson Rich Young explained that the company is aware of the sophisticated tactics employed by nation-state actors and is currently collaborating with law enforcement agencies to resolve the situation. This isn’t the first time the Trump campaign has faced cyber threats. In September, three Iranian nationals were charged for attempting to undermine a presidential campaign through hacking. Warnings about foreign interference, particularly regarding US elections, have been a consistent concern among government agencies. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan emphasized the seriousness of this issue earlier this summer, explaining that adversaries frequently view American elections as opportunities for influence and disruption. The ongoing dialogue in Congress, coupled with warnings from FBI Director Christopher Wray, stresses that nation-state hackers, particularly from China, might be ready to “wreak havoc” and cause significant harm to US infrastructure and security.
