Three police officers were killed and two others critically injured in a shooting in the US state of Pennsylvania, while following up on a 'domestic-related' investigation, authorities have confirmed.
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris reported that the gunman was fatally shot by the police. The incident occurred just after 2:00 PM local time.
Images from the scene depicted a police officer being airlifted by a medical helicopter. Due to the shooting, a nearby school district in the small town of Spring Grove was temporarily placed on lockdown, but it was later confirmed that the school had not been directly affected.
Officials assured the public that there was no active threat as of now. The shooting took place in a rural area of North Codorus Township, approximately 100 miles east of Philadelphia.
Authorities were at the location conducting an investigation that had started the previous day. Specific details about the shooting have yet to be shared as the investigation continues.
Governor Josh Shapiro visited the area and met with the families of the officers who lost their lives. He stated: 'We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country.' Shapiro has ordered all flags in the state to be flown at half-mast in their honor.
The FBI is also contributing by providing assistance to local and state authorities in the ongoing investigation. Our condolences and prayers are extended to the officers, their families, and the community at large.
