In brief

On October 30, 2026, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2834, giving the EU-led stabilization force EUFOR Althea and NATO presence in Bosnia and Herzegovina an additional 12‑month mandate. The decision also authorizes UN member states to assist and defend the forces if requested, underscoring continued international support for regional stability.

On Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, the UN Security Council unanimously extended the authorization of an EU‑led stabilization force in Bosnia and Herzegovina, giving European Union Force Althea, or EUFOR Althea, and NATO a further 12 months to continue their mission, Xinhua reported.

The resolution, designated 2834, also reaffirmed the presence of NATO forces in the country and authorized UN member states to take all necessary measures, upon request, in defense of the EUFOR Althea or the NATO presence. It recognized the right of both forces to defend themselves from attack or the threat of attack.

EUFOR Althea, a successor to a NATO‑led stabilization force, is tasked with ensuring continued compliance with the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement, which ended the Bosnian War of 1992‑1995, according to Xinhua.

In announcing the resolution, Xinhua noted that it also "authorises UN member states to take all necessary measures… to assist both organisations in carrying out their missions." The move marks a continued international commitment to stability in the former Yugoslav republic.
