In brief

Residents in the vicinity of Naples experienced a night of fear and uncertainty after a powerful earthquake rattled the region early Thursday morning.

In the early hours of Thursday, residents in Naples and surrounding areas took to sleeping outdoors as a precaution after a considerable earthquake struck. The seismic event, recorded at 4.4 magnitude by Italian seismologists, occurred at 01:25 local time and was located only three kilometers deep, triggering significant alarm among the residents. The US Geological Survey provided a slightly different measurement, noting it as a 4.2 magnitude quake at a depth of 10 kilometers. Following the initial tremor, which disrupted power across various spots in Naples, at least two weaker aftershocks rattled the region. In Pozzuoli, the town nearest to the earthquake's epicenter, emergency services were called to a partially collapsed house where one individual sustained injuries. Many residents fled their homes seeking safety, and photographs shared on social media captured scenes of damage, including a shattered car windshield and a building with visible structural issues. To facilitate stability assessments, schools in Pozzuoli and nearby neighborhoods will remain closed throughout Thursday, as authorities prioritize public safety and damage assessment. A rescue coordination center has been established to address affected areas and manage ongoing concerns as citizens remain vigilant for further seismic activity.Naples, located on the volcanic Phlegraean Fields, remains at risk for such seismic disturbances, prompting the community to remain alert amidst the chaos.
