In brief
Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar, who lost all but one member of his family in the attack, passed away on Saturday after suffering severe injuries.
In a heart-wrenching incident in Khan Younis, Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar, aged 40, died from injuries sustained during an Israeli airstrike that also claimed the lives of nine of his children. The attack took place on May 23 while Dr. Hamdi had just returned from dropping his wife, Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, a pediatrician at Nasser Hospital, to work. Their home was struck shortly afterward, leading to the devastating loss of their children, aged between six months and 12 years. Dr. Hamdi was receiving treatment for grave brain, internal, and lung injuries but lost his battle for life on Saturday, leaving only Dr. Alaa and their 11-year-old son, Adam, as survivors. Adam was severely injured, compelling his uncle, Dr. Ali al-Najjar, to plea for medical evacuation to Italy, highlighting the inadequacy of Gaza's medical facilities. The Italian government has expressed interest in facilitating his transfer. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that an investigation into the airstrike is ongoing, while they reported that the attack targeted suspects within a conflict zone. Amid the ongoing conflict sparked by Hamas's October 7 attack, the violence has seen significant casualties, with over 54,418 deaths reported in Gaza due to the conflict. The heartache of the al-Najjar family resonates within the broader tragedy affecting countless families in the region, as the unyielding war continues to wreak havoc.
