In brief
The former president faces a legal battle while dealing with health complications following an intestinal surgery.
The health conditions of Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s former president, have taken a turn for the worse following intestinal surgery he underwent earlier this month, as reported by his medical team. At the age of 70, Bolsonaro remains in intensive care, with new tests anticipated to evaluate his situation. On Wednesday, a court official visited him in the hospital to deliver a summons, requiring Bolsonaro to submit his initial defense against coup charges within five days, signaling preparations for his impending trial. The charges stem from allegations that Bolsonaro orchestrated a right-wing coup attempt following his defeat in the 2022 presidential elections to current President Lula da Silva. In a video capturing the moment the summons was served, an irate Bolsonaro expressed frustration, asking, “I have five days to present my defense?” The alleged coup attempt involved his supporters storming government buildings, with police investigations uncovering claims of Bolsonaro engaging in secret conversations, including with armed forces members, about plans to maintain power. The recent surgery was prompted by long-term health issues that arose after a stabbing during the 2018 campaign in Minas Gerais, leading to severe blood loss and immediate surgical intervention. Bolsonaro has consistently denied the coup allegations, characterizing them as part of a politically motivated witch-hunt against him.Despite his medical condition, Bolsonaro briefed the public via a live YouTube session from his hospital bed alongside three of his sons, flouting doctors' advice against visitors, a decision criticized by the Brazilian Supreme Court, which maintained that he was fit to be awarded the summons.Although he had aspirations to re-enter the presidential race in 2026, Bolsonaro currently faces a potential 40-year prison sentence if found guilty of the charges against him.
