In brief
A 17-year-old girl has tragically died from a shark attack at Woorim Beach in Queensland, Australia, while swimming just off Bribie Island.
A teenage girl has lost her life following a shark attack at Woorim Beach, located north of Brisbane, Queensland, on Monday afternoon. First responders were alerted about a "serious shark bite incident" at approximately 4:45 PM local time (06:45 GMT). Despite immediate medical attention, the girl succumbed to life-threatening injuries shortly after 5 PM. Reports indicate she was swimming around 100 meters from the shore when the attack took place. The specific species of the shark involved remains unidentified, although the waters around Bribie Island are known to host various shark species. Christopher Potter, a witness, noted that while the beach has protective measures in place, the presence of a shark so close to shore came as a shock. He mentioned, "It's known there are a lot of sharks around Bribie, but this close to shore, it's still a shock."Local authorities confirmed that the beach is monitored using drumlines designed to capture sharks that enter too close to swimming areas. Tragically, this incident marks the second shark fatality in Australian waters this year, with another occurring earlier in January. The last fatal shark attack in Brisbane took place in 2006.Queensland’s government reassures the public that shark attacks are rare and that most species pose little risk to swimmers. After the incident, local police announced they would be preparing a report for the coroner to investigate the circumstances surrounding this devastating event.
