In brief

Search and rescue teams are gearing up to find a fallen hiker, Juliana Marins, who has gone missing on Mount Rinjani.

In a race against time, rescue crews are mobilizing in Indonesia to locate Juliana Marins, a Brazilian climber who fell hundreds of feet on Mount Rinjani and has been out of contact since Saturday. Rescue workers are intensifying their efforts to reach Juliana Marins, a Brazilian woman in her 20s who fell approximately 1,600 feet from the summit of Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second-highest volcano. Her family reported her disappearance on Saturday, and as of Tuesday, she has not been located. Authorities, having analyzed drone footage, believe she may be motionless at the site of her fall. The Indonesian search and rescue office in Mataram has prioritized her rescue, with plans to deploy a helicopter equipped with ropes to facilitate the search, according to Muhamad Hariyadi, the head of the team. Hariyadi warned that the operation will be “very risky” due to the challenging conditions of the active volcano, located on the island of Lombok, just east of Bali.Mount Rinjani, towering at 12,224 feet, is a popular destination known for its breathtaking views and the stunning deep blue volcanic lake found in its caldera, situated about 6,500 feet above sea level. Many, including Marins, are drawn to the mountain for these panoramic vistas, particularly at sunrise. Prior to the incident, Marins sent messages and videos to her loved ones, expressing excitement for the adventure. In one video posted on an Instagram account that shares updates on her situation, she talked about climbing for the view, echoing sentiments from fellow climbers who filmed the equipment and fog-filled landscape. As search operations continue, her family remains hopeful for her safe return.
