Eyewitness footage shared on social media depicts the speedboat circling uncontrollably before crashing into the ferry, which subsequently capsized. The Indian Navy attributed the collision to an "engine malfunction" during trials of the naval craft. The privately operated ferry was en route to the Elephanta Caves, a well-known tourist attraction when the incident occurred.

Survivors recounted their harrowing experience, with one passenger telling ABP Majha news, "The speedboat crashed into our boat, and water started flooding in, causing it to overturn. The driver urged us to don life jackets." This individual managed to swim for around 15 minutes before being rescued by a nearby vessel.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the catastrophe, extending condolences to the victims' families and hoping for a swift recovery for those injured in the incident.
