Ingrid Daubechies, a distinguished mathematician from Duke University, is set to showcase her creativity this March with “Mathemalchemy,” a traveling immersive installation that beautifully marries math and art. Known for her whimsical pi-shaped cookies, which she crafts using her custom cookie cutter that eliminates waste, Dr. Daubechies bakes in honor of Pi Day on March 14 — a date emblematic of both the mathematical constant and the International Day of Mathematics, celebrating the theme of mathematics, art, and creativity this year.

This Pi Day, Dr. Daubechies will conduct tours at the University of Quebec in Montreal, inviting audiences to experience the dynamic world of Mathemalchemy. The exhibition, which is a grand multimedia installation spanning 20 feet long, 10 feet wide, and nine-and-a-half feet high, debuted in 2022 and has traveled widely since. Created in partnership with fiber sculptor Dominique Ehrmann and a talented team of 24 artistic mathematicians and mathematical artists, Mathemalchemy aims to challenge and ignite imaginations while deepening the appreciation of mathematics as an artistic medium.

Attendees can look forward to a unique public talk titled “Mathematics to the Rescue of Art Curators,” where Dr. Daubechies will explore how mathematical concepts can be applied to various artistic endeavors, highlighting the often-overlooked connections between these two fields. As audiences engage with this collaborative effort, they are invited to embrace the colorful, creative, and mathematical journey that Mathemalchemy promises.
