In brief

During a two-week expedition in Greenland, reporter Jeffrey Gettleman experienced the stark beauty of the Arctic and shared insights about locals' perspectives on the island's political spotlight, particularly regarding President Trump's interest in acquiring Greenland.

As I braced myself against the biting wind, bundled in layers of thermal gear, I sped across icy terrains on a snowmobile, racing toward a famed ice fishing location in Greenland. This January adventure took place amid frigid temperatures that hovered around five degrees and a dim sky reminiscent of nightfall, typical for the Arctic during winter months. Accompanied by a local family, my journey was part of an extensive reporting trip to Greenland, an island becoming more prominent in international discussions, notably for President Trump's expressed desire for its vast resources and strategic location.Beginning in Nuuk, the capital, I engaged with local politicians and citizens, diving into their thoughts about the political climate and Trump's ambitions. The consensus echoed clearly: they were not in favor of the U.S. purchasing their homeland. After a long day of interviews, I laced up my running shoes and ventured out into Nuuk’s snowy streets for some exercise. The paths were covered in ice, so I tread carefully. Just moments into my run, I encountered a group of runners heading the opposite direction. I thought I could stealthily join them, blending into the camaraderie. My attempt was cut short as a Danish runner called out, “Who are you?”This trip, rich with interactions and picturesque scenes, painted a vivid portrait of Greenland—a land so often associated with icy wilderness and wildlife but now at the center of geopolitical intrigue. As I continue to absorb and share the experiences of those I met, I recognize that Greenland's true charm lies not only in its breathtaking landscapes but also in the resilience and warmth of its people amidst outside pressures.
