In brief

Carl Lundstrom, known for his financial backing of the notorious file-sharing platform Pirate Bay, was killed during a small plane crash in Slovenia on March 14, 2025. The 64-year-old was piloting the aircraft when air traffic controllers lost contact. Bad weather hampered rescue efforts, with responders hiking to the remote crash site, where they later discovered debris and Lundstrom's body.

Authorities reported that Lundstrom was flying a Mooney M20 plane from Zagreb to Zurich when the crash occurred in the mountainous area of Velika Planina. As the pilot and the only occupant of the plane, Lundstrom's untimely demise has drawn attention due to his controversial past. An heir to the Swedish crisp bread company Wasabröd, he had previously been involved in far-right political activities and was convicted in 2009 for copyright infringement relating to his association with Pirate Bay. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, as the local police continue to gather details about the incident.
