Australia's eastern coastline has become a site of tragedy as five individuals have lost their lives due to severe wave conditions, coinciding with the Easter weekend.
Search and rescue operations are underway as two others remain unaccounted for along the coasts of New South Wales and Victoria. On Saturday, authorities recovered the body of a man near Tathra, New South Wales, following three separate drownings that occurred the previous day, including a 58-year-old fisherman.
Earlier reports indicated a woman drowned in San Remo, Victoria, while a man remains missing after their group was swept away by towering surf. "One of the women managed to reach the shore, but unfortunately, the other woman and man could not be located," stated Victoria police.
Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan expressed her condolences, commenting on the tragedy that has unfolded, and remarked on the potentially grave news awaiting families. “This is an awful start to the Easter weekend; my thoughts are with those who have tragically lost loved ones,” she added.
The situation highlights the dangers posed by Australia's beaches, especially under adverse weather conditions. Adam Weir, head of Surf Life Saving Australia, urged vacationers to only swim at patrolled beaches, noting that over 630 lives have been lost over the last decade at unpatrolled locations. He shared crucial safety advice: “Stop, Look, Stay Alive,” as unforeseen hazards persist along the shoreline.
As the rescue efforts continue, authorities urge everyone to remain vigilant as they navigate the treacherous waters.
