Hundreds of demonstrators surrounded Warsaw’s Constitutional Tribunal on Friday evening, clashing with riot police after the court’s president was suspended amid a growing dispute over judicial appointments, according to Xinhua and Polish Radio.
Police detained three protesters who had entered the court’s premises, and local media reported that several people were injured during the confrontation.
Backstage, the tribunal’s leadership announced that the (suspended president and vice‑president) had been removed for a month, a decision that the tribunal described as an illegitimate “coup” and that a newly elected judge—whose status remains disputed—assumed temporary control.
President Karol Nawrocki, who accepted the oaths of only three nominated judges, cut short a trip to Senegal to hold an emergency meeting with judicial officials and visit the court building later that night.
