The unforgettable Ferrari F2001, famously piloted by racing icon Michael Schumacher during his victorious 2001 Monaco Grand Prix, has been sold at auction for 15.98 million euros (£13.43 million). This remarkable sum makes it the most expensive car ever driven by Schumacher, 56, to be sold at auction.
Schumacher also utilized the F2001 to secure victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, further clinching his fourth world championship that year. RM Sotheby's conducted the auction shortly before this year's Monaco Grand Prix qualifying, adding to the event's excitement.
The sale of the F2001 not only set a new benchmark for Schumacher's racing vehicles but also placed it as the fourth most expensive Formula One car ever sold. The current record was established in February when a Mercedes 'streamliner' raced by legendary drivers Sir Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio went for an astounding £42.75 million.
Prior to this auction, the highest amount ever paid for a car driven by Schumacher was £9.75 million for his F2003 back in 2002. As Ferrari aims to replicate Schumacher's remarkable feats during the 2001 season, Charles Leclerc is set to start second on the grid behind McLaren's Lando Norris in this weekend's race.
