Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that the military has successfully "eliminated" Mohammed Sinwar, the chief of Hamas in Gaza. Sinwar, regarded as one of the most sought-after figures linked to the terrorist organization, is also the brother of the late Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces last year.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported that the operation targeting Sinwar occurred on May 13 during a massive strike on the courtyard and surrounding areas of the European hospital located in Khan Younis. The military claimed that the strike was aimed at dismantling Hamas's extensive underground infrastructure in the region, which has been pivotal in recent conflicts. This operation resulted in the deaths of 28 individuals, according to the health ministry controlled by Hamas.
As of now, Hamas has not publicly confirmed or denied the news of Sinwar’s death. The organization has faced immense pressure following Israel's military campaign, initiated in response to a cross-border attack on October 7, 2021. This alarming attack claimed roughly 1,200 lives and resulted in the abduction of 251 individuals.
Since the onset of this conflict, the humanitarian toll has skyrocketed, with Gaza's health ministry estimating that at least 54,084 people have died in the region. The impact of the ongoing Israeli airstrikes, combined with the political ramifications of the conflict, has led to a significant international outcry and calls for investigations into the situation in Gaza, including the strike on the European Hospital.
As the war between Israel and Hamas continues, both sides are bracing for the consequences of the latest developments as the situation remains highly volatile and tragic.
