In brief

Mumbai police have taken a suspect into custody implicated in the recent stabbing of prominent Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, who is currently recovering from surgery.

Authorities in Mumbai have arrested a man allegedly connected to the knife attack against Bollywood superstar Saif Ali Khan that occurred last week at his residence. The actor, well-regarded in India, suffered multiple stab wounds in an incident that has reverberated across the nation. Following the attack, Khan underwent surgery and is now on a path to recovery. The primary suspect has been identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national reportedly residing in India without legal status. The police announced his arrest in Thane, located on Mumbai's outskirts, adding that he had been working under a false identity for a cleaning agency since arriving in the city roughly six months ago. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam, preliminary findings propose that Shehzad's motive for breaking into Khan's home was robbery.Shehzad’s defense attorney, Sandeep Shikhane, refuted the accusations, asserting that there is no credible documentation to support Shehzad's Bangladeshi nationality and alleging that his client is being unjustly blamed. Following his arrest, the court has remanded him to five days in police custody for further investigation. The incident has brought major concern over safety in Mumbai, a bustling metropolis and the heart of India's film industry. Reports indicate that Khan was stabbed six times during the home invasion, which occurred after a nurse, present at the residence, noticed an intruder. The nurse later recounted that the intruder carried a wooden object and a knife and demanded a ransom of 10 million rupees ($115,477; £94,511) before a physical altercation ensued. In the aftermath of the stabbing, police questioned and subsequently released several individuals who bore a resemblance to the attacker, captured on surveillance footage while fleeing the crime scene. This incident continues to be a focal point of media coverage and public discourse regarding the need for improved security measures in India’s densely populated cities. The investigation proceeds, with authorities working diligently to piece together the events that led to this disturbing attack on one of India’s most beloved film figures.
