In brief

Gang violence intensifies in Haiti with airport closures and tragic losses, prompting widespread fear among residents and foreigners alike.

Haiti is facing an unprecedented security crisis as gang violence escalates dramatically. Over the past weekend, gang leaders, particularly Joseph Wilson—known as Lanmou Sanjou—took to social media to declare a new wave of violence, warning residents of severe consequences for disobedience. Their threats proved effective as, within days, at least three U.S. planes were shot at, forcing Toussaint Louverture International Airport to shut down and stranding numerous travelers worldwide. In the wake of these incidents, the Federal Aviation Administration halted all U.S. flights to Haiti for a 30-day period. American Airlines announced it would not resume services until at least February, while even United Nations humanitarian flights were grounded amid the chaos. The security situation extends beyond the airport; in a tragic incident, Dr. Deborah Pierre, a local urologist, was shot dead while getting into her vehicle, and her father sustained injuries in the attack. Reports also emerged detailing the peril faced by medical personnel amid escalating violence. Doctors Without Borders disclosed that their team was confronted by police, subsequently attacked by a vigilante mob while transporting wounded patients—suspected gang members—in an ambulance, resulting in additional fatalities. The instability in Port-au-Prince has resulted in many areas becoming virtual ghost towns, as fear of gang reprisals keeps residents indoors. Despite the ongoing attempts by a Kenyan-led international police force to restore order, the situation seems to worsen by the day. Local and international communities continue to express grave concern over the deteriorating circumstances in Haiti, highlighting the urgent need for effective intervention to reclaim safety and stability for its citizens.
