In brief

Kizza Besigye, a notable figure in Ugandan opposition politics, has resurfaced in a military court in Uganda after vanishing while attending an event in Kenya. His wife and officials confirmed his kidnapping while he was in Nairobi, raising concerns about the ongoing crackdown on opposition figures in the region.

On Saturday, Besigye was reportedly "kidnapped" in the Kenyan capital during a book launch attended by a Kenyan politician. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, disclosed this information through social media while stressing his lack of military affiliation. She pointed out the peculiar nature of his detention in a military facility without access to legal representation or family visitation. On Wednesday, Besigye was seen in court under heavy security, flashing a V-sign gesture. Both he and his associate, Haji Obeid Lutale, faced charges that included unlawful possession of firearms and conspiracy against military security. The authorities claimed they had conducted meetings in different countries to garner military support against the Ugandan government.Throughout the proceedings, Besigye and Lutale contested the accusations made against them. The case has heightened international scrutiny over human rights and political repression in Uganda and Kenya, as opposition leaders increasingly find themselves facing dire consequences for their political activities.
