In brief
As tensions escalate in Syria’s coastal regions, the White Helmets emerge as a neutral force committed to saving all lives.
In the midst of escalating violence in Syria's coastal regions, volunteer rescuers from the White Helmets have remained steadfast in their humanitarian mission. Recently, brutal retaliatory attacks, particularly targeting Alawites, have claimed numerous lives, prompting the White Helmets to respond quickly to the crisis. These volunteer groups, known for their role during the civil war in rebel-held territories, seek to provide support regardless of the victims' backgrounds.Following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad, White Helmets have expanded their operations across different areas in Syria, perceived as heroes by some and terrorists by others due to their neutral stance. Abdulkafi Kayal, the head of operations in the coastal area, emphasized their commitment to helping all individuals in distress, stating, "When we go to rescue someone in need, we don't ask them about their religion or political opinion."The onset of attacks earlier this month marked the most violent incidents since the transitional leadership took over. Reports indicate that more than 1,400 civilians have been killed across the violence-stricken provinces in recent weeks. Amidst chaos, the White Helmets documented a consistent workload, attending to an estimated 30 emergency calls each day, which included recovering over 100 deceased bodies. On the ground in Tartous, the team has faced not only physical dangers but emotional hardship, as they collected bodies of individuals who showed signs of grim fate. The local community, including acquaintances of the deceased, voiced their trust in the White Helmets, stating their unity in this humanitarian initiative, irrespective of sectarian lines. As families mourn their losses, many residents, like Saber—a state security officer—point fingers at the new regime for perpetrated revenge killings. However, the authenticity of many claims remains unverified by independent sources. In an effort to curb rising tensions, interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has pledged to establish an independent investigative committee to address the killings, a proactive step that many argue is vital to maintaining peace. As the situation develops, the White Helmets continue to promote their message: "To Save one life is to save all of humanity," remaining a beacon of hope in an increasingly fragmented society. With fears of rekindling civil war still looming, it remains crucial for the new government to ensure protection for all its citizens.
