On a sunny afternoon along the coast of Queensland’s Fraser Island (K'gari), a 7‑year‑old girl and her mother noticed a large, heavy body stranded on the beach at Wathumba Creek.
The creature turned out to be a humpback whale. Unable to breathe while stuck on the shore, the whale was in urgent need of help.
Local marine authorities responded quickly, mobilizing a specialised rescue team. After careful preparations, the whale was guided back to the ocean and released on the afternoon of Sunday, 9 August.
Experts from the Queensland Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation remind the public not to approach or touch stranded marine animals. Any sightings should be reported immediately to allow swift rescue action.
