In brief

The ongoing conflict in Sudan's Darfur region has resulted in over 400 deaths amid a brutal power struggle, prompting international alarm and a humanitarian response.

More than 400 individuals have reportedly lost their lives due to recent violent offensives executed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan's Darfur region, according to newer updates from the United Nations. The devastation has escalated dramatically as the RSF undertakes aggressive assaults, including ground and aerial bombardments on refugee camps surrounding El-Fasher, a crucial state capital that remains under the control of the Sudanese army—one of the adversarial factions in this prolonged conflict. The civil strife, which began in April 2023, has spiraled into one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises, displacing millions and forcing people into refugee camps where basic necessities are dwindling. The UN verified that between Thursday and Saturday, at least 148 people died, though their official tally is presumed to be significantly higher. UN spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani indicated that this figure excludes additional violence reported on Sunday. Amidst this perilous situation, the RSF faces allegations of being implicated in the violence, which included the deaths of nine humanitarian workers. However, the RSF claimed responsibility for liberating Zamzam camp from Sudan’s army, despite being charged with staging attacks against civilians to tarnish their reputation. The RSF accused the Sudanese army of exploiting the refugee camp for military purposes, further complicating the ongoing siege on El-Fasher. With El-Fasher being the last significant urban center in Darfur held by government forces, the violence and bloodshed are set to persist as the civil war nears its two-year mark. Amidst these harrowing developments, UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has urged all combatants to re-commit to finding resolute solutions to the ongoing conflict, which continues to result in dire outcomes for the civilian population.
