Virginia State University Shooting Leaves Five Injured; Suspects Still at Large

Five people have been injured, one critically, in a shooting at Virginia State University (VSU) involving multiple suspects.

Officers responded to the incident outside a residence hall around 01:28 local time on Saturday (05:28 GMT). Five individuals were found with gunshot wounds and taken to local hospitals; four of them had non‑life‑threatening injuries.

Local police told the BBC that more than one shooter was involved, but no arrests were made. A temporary lockdown on the campus was lifted, yet a significant law‑enforcement presence remains. The university confirmed that Chesterfield County Police lead the investigation with campus police and other agencies.

Classes for the new term are scheduled to start on Monday, and dormitories reopened for students on Friday. Lt. James R. Lamb said one victim was a student and another was under 18. The student victim has been discharged from hospital after sustaining non‑life‑threatening injuries.

“We don’t have anybody in custody,” Lamb told the BBC. “We know there was more than one shooter, so I’d say the suspects are still at large.” He added that investigators are still reviewing surveillance footage and have not treated any of the five injured as suspects.

VSU, a historically Black college, has about 5,000 students and sits roughly 20 miles south of Richmond, the state capital.
