In brief

The recent flooding in Catalonia has evoked a strong response with search and rescue operations gaining momentum following a previous disaster in Valencia.

The Spanish metropolis of Barcelona experienced severe flooding on Monday, prompting emergency services to intensify search and rescue efforts in Valencia, which has been grappling with the aftermath of catastrophic weather events over the past week. Spain's meteorological agency has issued a red alert for parts of Catalonia, indicating the potential for torrential rain, as images circulating in local media depict submerged vehicles on highways.El Prat Airport, the country’s second busiest, has been impacted, resulting in the cancellation or delay of over 80 flights, alongside suspended rail services. The Valencia region has previously suffered from catastrophic rainfall that led to a death toll exceeding 217. Rescue operations are now focused on finding individuals who may be trapped in submerged underground facilities following the devastating flash floods.Authorities reported that many victims were caught in their cars during the storms, with significant challenges faced when attempting to reach those stranded in basements and garages. In the search areas, particularly an underground car park in Aldaia near Valencia, rescues have commenced, though initial checks of the first 50 vehicles did not reveal any missing individuals.Tragically, a British couple in their 70s was confirmed among the fatalities, when their family reported their remains found post-flooding. As of now, rescues in Catalonia have not yet accounted for any fatalities. Meanwhile, UEFA has announced a minute of silence for those affected, coinciding with matches involving major clubs like FC Barcelona and Real Madrid this week.On the ground in Valencia, piles of debris and murky water are being dealt with as rescue teams utilize drones for aerial assessments of disaster sites. Amid the urgency, frustration has grown over the perceived inadequate warnings and support from state authorities following the floods, leading to protests during a royal visit to the community of Paiporta, a key area impacted by the flooding. The Spanish government has mobilized military support, including 500 troops pre-deployed to assist, and has acknowledged that challenges in communication and logistics hampered quicker reactions during the floods. With the situation oscillating rapidly, local officials have implemented a series of travel restrictions to assist emergency responders, canceled classes, and recommended remote work.In the coming hours, more than 7,800 armed forces members are expected to be on standby, aided by thousands of volunteers assisting throughout Valencia. As the region lays under threat once more due to incoming rain accumulated from a Dana weather phenomenon, experts have raised concerns about the intensifying impacts of climate change.Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to share their experiences if it is safe to do so, as the community rallies together to navigate through this trying time.
