Trump Threatens Kennedy Center Demolition If Renovations Block Court Order

The Trump administration has threatened to demolish Washington’s Kennedy Center if the court blocks its planned renovations, according to court documents.
Justice Department attorneys pushed to have President Donald Trump’s name reinstated on the building after it was removed following a June court order.
"An order blocking the Board from properly recognising President Trump will cause donors to flee, financial contributions to dry up, and structural rehabilitation to stop," the lawyers argued.
The venue, a flagship Washington cultural site, has been a target of Trump’s renovation agenda since his return to the White House in 2025.
Trump’s attorneys contended that without renovations the Kennedy Center will deteriorate into an unsafe, decrepit structure that will necessitate demolition.
They also described the venue as “embarrassing to the Nation’s Capital.”
If the “decrepit structure” is taken down, a judge will determine what replacement to build, possibly a large outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River.
Kennedy Center board votes to put Trump’s name back on building
Many board members who voted for the restoration are Trump appointees.
In late May, a U.S. judge ruled that adding the president’s name unlawfully, since the venue must be renamed only with congressional approval.
The judge ordered removal, and the name was taken down in June.
The case stems from a broader dispute over renaming the cultural institution, designated as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy.
Trump’s renovation portfolio includes the National Mall’s reflecting pool, a 250‑foot victory arch, the demolition of the White House East Wing for a ballroom, and adding his name to other institutions like the US Institute of Peace.
