Trump Pays $5M Damages to E. Jean Carroll After Jury Verdict

A civil judgment that assigns former President Donald Trump $5 million in damages to writer E. Jean Carroll has been enforced, with the payment now transferred to the plaintiff. The ruling, issued by a Brooklyn jury in 2023, found Trump liable for sexual abuse in the mid‑1990s and for defamation following a 2022 Truth Social post that denied Carroll’s allegations.

According to Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, the settlement exceeds $5.6 million when interest accrued during the appeals process is included. The judge ordered the funds be released to Carroll, a former magazine columnist now 82, after Trump tried to delay payment and appeal the verdict.

“Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damage payments the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict,” Kaplan said in a statement. Trump’s representatives declined to comment, and the former president has rejected the allegations in both criminal and civil forums.

The case underscores Trump’s extended legal battles following his 2021 racketeering trial and other civil suits. Carroll has publicly condemned Trump’s campaign of what she describes as a "witch hunt," citing the judgment as a vindication of her claims.
