Tiger Woods Charged with DUI After Car Crash in Florida
Golfer Tiger Woods has been charged with driving under the influence after a car crash in Florida, police say. The Martin County Sheriff's Office said the 15-time major champion had also been charged with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Sheriff John Budensiek said Woods, 50, had rolled his Land Rover vehicle after clipping a pressure cleaner truck on Jupiter Island on Friday.
The golfer, who had to crawl out of the passenger side of his vehicle, passed a breathalyzer test after the crash but refused a urine test. Authorities confirmed no one sustained any injuries in the incident, which took place on Beach Road just after 14:00 local time (about 19:00 GMT).
Sheriff Budensiek told a news conference: The DUI investigators came to the scene, and Mr. Woods did exemplify signs of impairment. Investigators conducted several tests on him while considering his previous injuries and surgeries. He was placed under arrest and taken to the Martin County jail.
At the Martin County jail, and even on scene, we were really not suspicious of alcohol being involved in this case, and that proved to be true, Budensiek said. He described Woods as cooperative but noted that he was trying not to incriminate himself. He confirmed that Woods has the right to refuse the urine test, which will lead to an additional charge. However, it means definitive results regarding any substances impairing him at the time of the crash will remain unknown.
US President Donald Trump commented on the situation, mentioning, I feel so badly. [Woods has] got some difficulty. There was an accident. That's all I know. He's a very close friend of mine, he's an amazing person, an amazing man.
Sheriff Budensiek indicated Woods would remain in jail for eight hours before being released on bond. The BBC has reached out to Woods’ representatives for further comment.
