The goat is now a celebrity – how this graduation gift went viral

Promise Okoro, a 23‑year‑old pharmaceutical technology student, expected the usual end‑of‑term celebrations after completing his final exams at the Federal Polytechnic Nekede. The moment was captured on video and quickly spread online, drawing thousands of warm reactions. For many outside south‑eastern Nigeria a goat seems an unusual gift for a graduation, but among the Igbo people the animal carries cultural weight – a symbol of respect, appreciation, and goodwill at grand occasions such as weddings and traditional ceremonies.

He says he was not embarrassed at all; his classmates cheered, and the goat became a campus icon, even visiting a supermarket where fans lined up for photos. The goat’s fondness for fried rice, a revelation that sparked laughter online, further endeared it to fans.

Chinyere travelled more than an hour from their village to surprise her son at the university for the gift, citing her belief that a car was beyond her means. She purchased the goat for 120,000 naira ($88) as a pledge of love and pride for her son’s success. Promise expressed his gratitude and vowed to keep the goat alive, expressing plans to breed a female goat and start a small herd.

Beyond the social media buzz, Promise’s story reflects the cultural values of the Igbo community, where animals serve as tangible markers of achievement and appreciation. The viral moment has united thousands of people online, sparking deeper conversations about Nigerian education, traditions, and the powerful charm of an unexpected animal gift.
