BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand’s Supreme Court has confirmed that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is required to serve a one-year prison sentence following past convictions. The court's ruling comes amidst scrutiny over the handling of his return to Thailand earlier this year, where he was expected to commence his sentences.

After spending over ten years in self-imposed exile, Thaksin returned to Thailand, only to be transferred to a suite at Bangkok’s Police General Hospital shortly thereafter. This took place after he had spent merely a day in custody, raising concerns regarding the legitimacy of his medical needs.

Originally sentenced to eight years due to three separate corruption cases, Thaksin's term was reduced to one year by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, and he was released from prison after seemingly only six months in hospital care.

The unusual circumstances of Thaksin's quick transition from prison to a hospital setting have cast a shadow of suspicion over whether he was treated preferentially and led many to question the sincerity of his medical condition.
