CHICAGO (AP) — Police in Spain have intensified their search for a college student from Illinois reported missing after a night out with friends in Barcelona.
James 'Jimmy' Gracey, a 20-year-old student at the University of Alabama, was last seen at a nightclub in the city and was reported missing after failing to return to his accommodation early Tuesday morning. His friends stated he was separated from them around 3 a.m., and family members in Elmhurst, Illinois, are deeply concerned for his safety.
The search operations are being conducted by regional Catalan police, which includes aerial patrols and underwater searches in the surrounding areas.
According to a social media post from Gracey's family, he was last seen outside Shoko, a nightclub near Barceloneta Beach, wearing a white shirt and dark pants along with a chain featuring a gold rhinestone cross.
Gracey’s family has expressed their distress, emphasizing that his lack of communication is highly unusual for him. They stated, 'Jimmy is a kind, responsible, and devoted son and brother' and have been working closely with local authorities. They appreciate the support and urge the public to keep him in their thoughts.
Friends remaining in Barcelona have already begun distributing missing person signs that display Gracey's photo and details of his last known whereabouts.
The University of Alabama has also issued a statement reiterating their support for Gracey's family and encouraging anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to contact local authorities. Gracey, a member of the Theta Chi fraternity, holds two significant positions within his university chapter. Since his disappearance, fraternity officials have been in contact with lawmakers and the university, aiding in the ongoing search efforts.
