In a notable shift within German politics, Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, congratulated Alice Weidel, leader of the hard-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, after it secured 20.8% of the vote in the recent national elections—its highest showing ever. Although the party did not meet its aspirational targets, Musk's call came as a significant moment in the aftermath of the elections.

Weidel revealed to journalists that she had initially missed Musk's call while she was asleep but later found his message on her phone. At that moment, the world’s richest man had extended his personal congratulations to her. Hours later, Musk publicly supported her via a post on X, amplifying a compliment made by Hungary's Viktor Orban regarding the AfD's rising influence. Musk added his own note, stating, “Indeed, congratulations @Alice_Weidel! At this rate of growth, @AfD will be the majority party by the next election.”

The AfD's election performance marked a milestone in its political journey, cementing its position as the second-largest party in Germany— a far cry from its previous 10.3% in 2021. However, with the first-place Christian Democrats led by Friedrich Merz unwilling to collaborate with the AfD, Weidel's party faces a continued struggle for influence.

While parts of the AfD's agenda—focused on stricter immigration laws and economic reform—are seen as extremist by German intelligence, notable political figures such as U.S. Vice President JD Vance have previously engaged with Weidel, advocating for broader democratic inclusion of far-right elements.

Musk had previously stirred controversy by endorsing the AfD on his social media platform and participating in party events, all of which have sparked heated debates in Germany. Despite the public endorsement, the party’s appeal may not have surged to the expected levels, according to co-leader Tino Chrupalla. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that Musk's involvement has attracted interest and donations from other business leaders.

In this evolving narrative, Musk’s engagement with the AfD reveals his commitment to politically unconventional alliances, potentially influencing future political dynamics in Germany.
