Poland has said a Russian military helicopter briefly violated its airspace, forcing the Nato member to scramble fighter jets while ground forces remained on alert.
Polish forces reported that a Mi‑8 aircraft crossed from Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave into Polish airspace on Wednesday morning, penetrating to about 300 metres and staying for 42 seconds north of Braniewo.
The incident, seen as a test of Poland’s air‑defence readiness, highlighted growing tensions as Russia’s hybrid threat intensifies. Polish Defence Minister Donald Tusk warned that Moscow could potentially use drones and missiles to intimidate NATO bases along the eastern flank.
While Russia has not yet commented, similar incursions have included Russian drones landing in Poland and unarmed missiles. Experts argue that these events are part of a broader strategy to pressure Europe, even as President Putin denies any plan to attack NATO states.
The episode came on a day of heightened surveillance, with fighter jets on standby and all air‑defence units operating round the clock. The Polish Army Operational Command confirmed the radar tracking of the helicopter at 11:08 (09:08 GMT).
