In brief

Authorities confirm no injuries yet warn of toxic air risks as firefighters work to contain the fire and investigate the cause.

The Czech Republic is currently grappling with a hazardous train fire that erupted after a freight train carrying the toxic chemical benzene derailed. The incident, which took place near Hustopeče nad Bečvou, about 50 kilometers southwest of the Polish border, has led to the mobilization of firefighters from various regions along with a specialized mobile chemical laboratory.Local reports indicate that several tankers and the locomotive caught fire, creating a large cloud of dense smoke visible from several kilometers away. Fortunately, officials have reported no injuries resulting from the derailment and subsequent blaze.Initial investigations suggest that the train "split apart" before the derailment, which also caused a nearby electric substation to ignite, disrupting power to Hustopeče. Eyewitnesses described flames surging to heights of up to 20 meters at the peak of the fire, while dramatic drone footage captured by the Czech fire service revealed numerous severely damaged tankers, some continuing to smolder as thick plumes of black smoke ascended.Firefighting crews deployed heavy foam to control the spread of the flames and hosed down unaffected tankers to mitigate the risk of further explosions. A helicopter was also dispatched to assist efforts, and officials mentioned it took hours to get the fire under control. The blaze affected approximately 15 of the 17 benzene tankers involved, with an estimated damage cost of 125 million Czech koruna (£4.1 million).Local residents have been advised to stay indoors and avoid opening windows or doors due to potential air quality concerns. However, officials noted that current pollution levels have not exceeded safety limits. Meanwhile, police have initiated an investigation into the cause of the train derailment. Benzene, a highly flammable and toxic chemical, poses serious health risks, including drowsiness and long-term health complications from prolonged exposure.
