RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Former U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema has acknowledged a romantic relationship with a member of her security detail that began while she was serving in office, according to legal documents. Sinema is now contesting a lawsuit filed by the bodyguard’s ex-wife, who alleges that Sinema is responsible for the dissolution of their marriage.

The lawsuit, filed in North Carolina federal court, seeks monetary damages from Sinema, who represented Arizona in Congress until early last year. Heather Ammel claims that her marriage to Matthew was strong until Sinema intervened, allegedly pursuing him knowing he was married.

According to Sinema’s declaration, her relationship with Matthew Ammel became romantic and intimate at the end of May 2024, escalating in various locations across the country, including California and New York. The Ammels separated in November 2024.

North Carolina is among a few states that allow spouses to sue a third party for 'alienation of affection'. This legal recourse is aimed at those deemed responsible for the breakup.

In her defense, Sinema refuted claims made by Heather Ammel that she directly communicated with her husband while he was in North Carolina. Sinema's attorney noted that by the time of one of the messages sent, Matthew had already found a new residence, suggesting that the marriage was effectively over.

The lawsuit was originally filed in a state court in September and later transferred to federal court in January 2026. Following her term as Senator, Sinema announced she would not seek re-election and has since aligned herself with a Washington-based legal and lobbying firm.
