A U.S. missionary and pilot who has worked in Niger for 19 years was secured this Friday after being held captive for nearly nine months.

Rideout was abducted outside his home in Niamey in October 2025. Three armed men took him to the western Tillaberi region, a zone now infamous for militant activity.

Reports indicate he was taken by militants linked to the al‑Qaeda affiliate JNIM. Early warnings from the U.S. Embassy had already been issued advising citizens against traveling into Niger.

SIM International, the Christian organization for which Rideout served, confirmed his “good health” and “immediate release,” stating he is now under the care of FBI authorities. The group also announced he will soon rejoin his family.
