In brief
The United Nations has reported a concerning trend in Iran with the execution of at least 901 individuals in 2024, marking a 6% rise from the previous year and the highest execution count in nine years. UN human rights chief Volker Türk described the situation as "deeply disturbing," emphasizing the need for Iran to halt this escalating cycle of executions. While the majority of those executed faced charges related to drug offenses, authorities also targeted dissidents and individuals linked to the protests that erupted after the death of a young Kurdish woman in September 2022.
Türk called for immediate action from Iranian officials, advocating for a moratorium on the death penalty to address its incompatibility with the right to life and the risk of wrongful executions. The Iranian Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) and other organizations revealed that 31 women were among those executed, the highest tally in nearly two decades. Some cases highlighted included allegations of women committing violent acts in response to personal tragedies, raising significant questions about the circumstances surrounding their convictions.Furthermore, reports indicated that more than half of the executed individuals belonged to ethnic minorities, particularly Kurds, suggesting discrimination within the justice system. Kurdish human rights group Hengaw reported that authorities disproportionately impacted ethnic and religious minorities during the government's crackdown following the protests. Alarmingly, the execution of five juvenile offenders was also documented, directly contravening international legal standards.Amnesty International noted that Iran accounted for a staggering 74% of all documented executions globally in 2023, excluding secretive data from China, which is believed to execute thousands annually. The growing rates of executions in Iran not only reflect a severe human rights crisis but also shed light on the urgent need for international oversight and intervention in the country’s judicial practices. As the world watches, the call to abolish the death penalty in Iran grows louder, compelling both national and international voices to demand justice and accountability.
