In brief

A bomb dropped by Israel on a Gaza City apartment in the western al‑Sabra neighbourhood razed the home to the ground and killed all six members of a single family. Medics on the scene confirmed the deaths of Firas al‑Masri, his wife Salsabeel, and their four children. Israel insists the target was a Hamas operative, citing ongoing investigations. In the broader context, Gaza’s health ministry reports over 1,168 Palestinian casualties since the ceasefire, while the UN has condemned the rising civilian toll. The incident underscores the continuing humanitarian crisis in Gaza amid a series of concentrated strikes.

City residents witnessed a fierce explosion that turned a family’s apartment into an inferno on the overnight of the 21st July. Local medics confirm that all six occupants died, including the father, Firas al‑Masri, his wife Salsabeel, and their children Salma, Amira, Naim, and Faryal.

In a statement to the BBC, the brother of Firas explained that the blaze‑filled apartment left no survivors.

Israel says the strike targeted a Hamas operative and is probing the outcomes of the attack, but the presence of a civilian household lends credence to reports of collateral damage. In total, the Gaza Health Ministry reports more than 1,168 Palestinians killed since the ceasefire began last October, underscoring the dire humanitarian crisis.

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has condemned the recent increase in civilian casualties. Between 13 and 20th July alone, 57 Palestinians were killed in residential buildings or crowded areas outside the “Yellow Line,” a term denoting Israeli‑occupied territory inside Gaza.

In response to the ongoing hostilities, Israel has intensified attacks on alleged Hamas militants, pointing to their role in the 7 October 2023 assault that killed around 1,200 people and seized 251 hostages.

Israel’s own casualty figures indicate that four soldiers have been killed in Gaza during the same period, while the Palestinian side reports a significant human toll extending beyond the immediate strike.

The tragedy of the al‑Masri family is one of many that illustrate the dire living conditions for residents in Gaza, where frequent bombings and continuous fire cause immeasurable loss and suffering.
