French far-right political tensions are at an all-time high as National Rally (RN) president Jordan Bardella rallies supporters for a protest in Paris this Sunday. The demonstration aims to oppose a recent court ruling that has barred Marine Le Pen from running for public office for five years, casting a shadow over her ambitions for the 2027 presidential election.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Bardella expressed outrage at the verdict, which resulted from allegations of Le Pen's involvement in the embezzlement of €2.9 million ($3.4 million) of EU funds between 2004 and 2016. He emphasized the necessity for "democratic, peaceful, calm mobilisations," urging French citizens to take to the streets in response to the ruling.

Le Pen, who has remained a prominent figure in France's far-right political landscape, characterized the situation as a "nuclear bomb" launched against her party, intended to sabotage their chances of electoral victory. She rallied her supporters, saying they should channel their feelings of "outrage and hurt" into determination to fight until victory.

Bardella condemned what he termed the "tyranny of the judges," and both he and Le Pen denounced the threats and insults directed at judiciary members post-verdict. According to sources, Judge Bénédicte de Perthuis, who presided over Le Pen's case, has been placed under police protection due to the threats received.

Le Pen's presidential aspirations may now hinge on Bardella, despite resistance to her relinquishing her political role. Although Bardella is deemed a viable successor, he remains noncommittal regarding stepping into the lead while Le Pen appeals against her ruling, which includes a hefty fine and potential prison sentence.

Le Pen has strong supporters across Europe, including endorsements from Hungary’s Viktor Orban and U.S. President Donald Trump. They view the verdict as a blow to democratic representation. However, recent polls suggest that if Bardella were to run, he might garner substantial support from RN voters, perhaps positioning him as the party’s emergent leader amid the turmoil.

As the dust settles on this controversial ruling, the rally in Paris is expected to attract significant attention in the ongoing political drama surrounding the far-right in France.
