Suspected drone sightings have disrupted flights at airports across Belgium on Tuesday, with no flights departing or arriving at Brussels Airport - the country's busiest.

Air traffic there was suspended around 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT) after a drone sighting. An hour later it briefly reopened, before closing again shortly after.

Liege Airport has also been affected and it is not clear when flights will resume. Local media also reported drone sightings at the Kleine-Brogel and Florennes military airbases, local media reports.

This incident is the latest in a series of suspected drone sightings causing disruption at European airports, including in Munich, Copenhagen, and Oslo.

A statement on the Brussels Airport website on Tuesday evening stated: There are currently no departing or arriving flights at Brussels Airport due to drone sightings around the airport. Officials are monitoring the situation and promise to provide updates as more information is available.

Photos taken inside the airport show makeshift camp beds prepared for stranded passengers. Additionally, Brussels's second-largest airport, Charleroi, also saw a brief halt in air traffic as a precaution.

Initially, some flights were rerouted to Liege, but that airport subsequently closed due to the same drone concerns. As a result, flights were then diverted to other airports, including Ostend and Charleroi in Belgium, as well as Eindhoven and Maastricht in the Netherlands.

This marked the fourth consecutive night that Belgian authorities reported drone activity over Kleine-Brogel, a significant military base near the Dutch border. Defense Minister Theo Francken has indicated that an investigation is ongoing, labeling the sightings as a blatant mission targeting the base.

Drone sightings were also reported near Ostend and Antwerp's Deurne airports over the past weekend.
