Five people have been injured, one critically, in a shooting at Virginia State University which involved multiple suspects, the university has said.
Officers responded to the incident outside a residence hall at about 1:28 a.m. local time (05:28 GMT) on Saturday.
All five were taken to local hospitals with gunshot wounds, though four were not considered life‑threatening. The university said it was unclear whether any suspect had been arrested.
A temporary lockdown on the campus has since been lifted, but a significant law‑enforcement presence remains on site. The university confirmed the campus remains under watch by Chesterfield County Police, who are leading the investigation with assistance from other local agencies and campus police.
Virginia State University, a historically Black college founded to provide higher education to African Americans, has about 5,000 students. It sits approximately 20 miles south of Virginia’s capital, Richmond.
Classes were scheduled to begin on Monday, raising concerns for students and faculty alike as the investigation continues.
