The family of Renee Good is accusing federal immigration officers of killing the Minneapolis mother as she attempted to follow agents’ instructions. On Wednesday, they announced that they have hired the same law firm, Romanucci & Blandin, which represented George Floyd’s family, to seek answers and accountability for Good's death.
In a statement released, her loved ones emphasized that Good, 37, should be remembered as 'an agent of peace' and urged the public not to politicize her tragic demise. The firm is expected to unveil information from its ongoing investigation in the coming weeks.
This development comes as the Justice Department declared it sees no basis for a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting. Meanwhile, an FBI probe into Good's death remains active.
Defending the actions of the ICE officer involved, the Trump administration stated that the agent fired in self-defense while positioned in front of Good’s vehicle as it began to move. This explanation has met with widespread criticism from local leaders, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who question the officer's use of force based on footage of the incident.
As federal prosecutors in Minnesota resign en masse, the family's legal team is calling for clarity regarding the federal operation that took place on January 7, the events leading to Good's death, and delays in medical assistance post-shooting.
Reports indicate that Good’s wife, Becca Good, and other relatives assert they had just left their child at school when they stopped to observe law enforcement activities. According to their attorneys, Good seemed to have reversed and turned her vehicle away from an agent before being shot, although the investigation has yet to release an official account.
The law firm plans to keep the community informed of their findings, stressing a lack of transparency in the information provided to the public. They aim to address any discrepancies and seek justice for Good’s family, echoing their previous success in securing a settlement for Floyd’s family.
