In brief

Residents of Delhi are waking up to thick layers of smog as the city's air pollution levels reach 'severe' categories. The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that particulate matter levels in the capital and surrounding areas exceed the safe limit by 30-35 times. Seasonal factors such as colder temperatures, vehicle emissions, and crop burning contribute to hazardous conditions between October and January. As per the Swiss Air Quality Index, some regions recorded pollution levels exceeding 500 AQI on Wednesday. This chronic issue prompts concerns about public health, with 81% of families in the area reporting health issues from pollution.

The Delhi government's Graded Response Action Plan has banned certain polluting activities and urged citizens to use public transport, yet the efforts have done little to mitigate the ongoing crisis. Delhi has been ranked the most polluted capital city globally in 2023, and India ranks third globally, following Bangladesh and Pakistan. Swift industrialization, coupled with inadequate environmental regulations, has exacerbated the air quality crisis. As pollution in India continues to escalate, local experts stress the urgent need for stronger enforcement of environmental laws and sustainable development practices to protect public health.
