In brief

With a March 31 deadline for deportation looming, Afghan refugees in Pakistan are gripped by uncertainty, fearing what lies ahead as they potentially return to a Taliban-led Afghanistan.

In a refugee community on the outskirts of Karachi, Afghan families observed Eid al-Fitr this past Sunday with a heavy sense of dread. As the March 31 deportation deadline approaches, thousands of Afghans who have sought shelter in Pakistan are faced with the grim prospect of returning to Taliban-governed Afghanistan, where danger looms. The plight of Afghan refugees in Pakistan has persisted since the Soviet invasion in 1979, as millions have fled violence and instability over the years. While some have managed to return home, many continue to seek refuge due to ongoing conflicts. The most recent wave of refugees followed the Taliban's takeover in August 2021, with some having received promises of resettlement in the United States, yet they are now facing forced repatriation.Community leaders, like Haji Abdullah Bukhari, have called for compassion and extended support from Pakistan, arguing that uprooting families who have lived there for decades is unjust. "Many of these people barely remember their homeland and are being sent back without adequate time to prepare," he lamented. This mass deportation of Afghan refugees is aggravated by rising frustrations in Pakistan regarding the Taliban’s perceived support of militant groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which have been linked to recent violent attacks in Pakistan. Although the Taliban deny these claims, the tensions between the two countries continue to escalate, further exacerbating the situation for Afghan refugees. As the deadline draws near, the uncertainty for these families grows, with fears that returning home could mean confronting reignited conflict and violence.
