ATLANTA (PulseWire) — Tragedy has struck in Georgia as an eighth body has been uncovered at the scene of a devastating highway crash involving a semitrailer and a van, according to Deputy Jackson County Coroner Dean Stringer.
The catastrophic event unfolded Monday afternoon on Interstate 85 in Jackson County, about 62 miles northeast of Atlanta, when a semitrailer struck a Dodge van, igniting a fierce blaze.
Officials report that the semitrailer was tailgating the van at the time of the crash. Subsequently, four additional vehicles were caught in what authorities described as a “chain reaction” incident.
Among the vehicles impacted was a van affiliated with Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters. The driver of the rescue van suffered minor injuries, while the organization reported that animals were scattered due to the accident.
“In the chaos of the wreckage, cages were crushed, and cats began to flee,” stated CEO Samantha Shelton on the organization’s Facebook page. The van was transporting 37 cats to a shelter in Vermont; as of Tuesday, two cats remain unaccounted for, and one is reported hospitalized in critical condition.
As the investigation unfolds, the identities of the victims have yet to be released. Georgia Department of Public Safety spokesperson Franka Young informed the media that troopers are actively working to confirm the identities of the deceased.
Initially, seven individuals were reported dead at the site of the crash, with the eighth body later recovered from the location. The incident is currently under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
