In brief

A seasoned worker at Beekse Bergen zoo in the Netherlands was killed days after a fatal encounter with two Persian leopards. The 61‑year‑old keeper was caring for the animals in an indoor enclosure when the leopards suddenly attacked, leaving her with critical head and neck injuries. Despite rapid medical intervention, she died in hospital. An independent inquiry has been announced, and the park confirmed the leopards will remain confined. The zoo has pledged support to the keeper’s family and plans a memorial for mourners.

Beekse Bergen zoo in the south of the Netherlands lost a veteran keeper last week after an attack by two Persian leopards.

The 61‑year‑old, who had been with the park for four decades, was tending to the animals in a temporary indoor facility when the leopards leapt on her. She sustained severe head and neck injuries and was air‑lifted to a hospital. Despite emergency surgery she died on Tuesday.

There were no cameras inside the enclosure, so investigators are still piecing together what triggered the attack. The park has said it will launch an independent inquiry and will not euthanise the leopards, which were being kept indoors because of bad weather.

“Her passing has deeply affected us all,” the zoo said in a statement. “We are focusing on supporting her family and staff.” A memorial area will be set up for visitors and employees to pay their respects.

The incident highlights the risks of working with predators and has prompted the park to review its safety protocols.
