In brief
In a crimean village, a soldier unleashed a random gun rampage that killed one of his comrades and three civilians, including a 71‑year‑old man and a 64‑year‑old woman. Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Moscow‑installed governor, confirmed the attack and stated that the perpetrator was detained, though his identity and service branch remain undisclosed. Three others were injured, and medical teams are working to treat them. While no final death toll is yet expected, authorities urge the public to rely only on official information. The incident highlights the fragility of security in the Russian‑occupied peninsula, which attracts frequent attacks and drone strikes from Ukrainian forces.
Four people have been killed by a Russian soldier in the Crimea during an apparently random gun rampage.
The Moscow‑installed governor Mikhail Razvozhayev said the gunman first fired on his fellow soldiers, killing one and wounding another. He then turned on civilians in the village of Khmelnytske, taking the lives of two men aged 71 and 59 and a 64‑year‑old woman, and injuring three more people.
The attacker has been detained. Razvozhayev stated that the motive behind the shooting is still being investigated, but the attacker’s identity and his branch within the Russian Armed Forces have not yet been publicly disclosed.
Officials warned against spreading unverified rumours and urged the public to rely solely on official information. Doctors are "doing everything possible" to treat the injured.
Russia has controlled Crimea since 2014, a territory largely recognized by the international community as an occupied Ukrainian land. The region hosts a large Russian military presence that Ukraine has repeatedly targeted with drone and missile strikes.
