In brief
Poland has positioned extra police units along its border with Russia's Kaliningrad Region, says police chief Marek Boron, citing the need to guard against sabotage. The deployment follows concerns over jingoist rhetoric in Polish media, to which the Russian embassy in Warsaw responded with criticism.
Poland has positioned extra police units along its border with Russia's Kaliningrad Region, according to Polish police chief Marek Boron, who said the move was part of an operation against acts of sabotage.
In a statement released on July 17, 2014, Boron told RMF FM radio that «The police are ensuring security [on the border] with the Kaliningrad Region in case of potential incidents that could lead to acts of sabotage. That is why reinforcements from police departments in several provinces have arrived at the border area.»
The reinforcement comes amid growing concerns over sabotage acts and heightened tensions between Poland and Russia.
By way of counter‑point, the Russian embassy in Warsaw criticized the narrative in Polish media, accusing it of jingoist rhetoric and of fueling allegations of potential sabotage.
